We collect local-ecotype seed off Flint Hills remnants and get it back onto restoration acres within about a hundred miles, because seed from Iowa does not do well here. Last season we handled 1,900 pounds of bulk seed and burned 3,400 acres with landowner crews. Donations mostly buy drip torches, fuel, and the cooler space we need to hold seed over winter.

The Trust holds 1,180 acres of dry hill prairie and oak savanna in Vernon and Crawford counties, either in fee or under permanent easement. Our restoration work is unglamorous: brush removal, goat grazing on the steep faces, and a burn rotation we have kept to for twenty years. Contributions are split between the stewardship endowment and the acquisition fund.

Finding and documenting what is left of the Blackland Prairie, which is under one percent of the original. Mostly cemetery remnants and railroad right of way. We survey, we collect seed where the landowner allows it, and we try to get remnants protected before they get scraped for a subdivision. Two of us, part time.
